Scientific Paper

Presented within a 4-minute time period. Original work on a clinical and/or research topic.

Submission Guidelines (must include the following):

  1. The concise purpose.
  2. The methods and materials used.
  3. Experience including number of cases and follow-up. Only final data should be submitted.
  4. Summary of results.
  5. Reasonable and understandable conclusions.
  6. In an effort to promote evidence-based medicine, ASPS is now asking that abstract submissions include additional details about the work. Following the upload of your abstract text, you will be asked to provide information in separate fields on the questions below:
    • Type of clinical question
    • Study population
    • Intervention/Exposure of Interest
    • Outcome
    • Research Design
    • Methods
    • Data
    • Conclusion
      Note: Some/Many of the text field answers may be contained in the text of your abstract so you will be able to simply cut and paste from your abstract text as necessary.
  7. Optional: relevant photographs/illustrations clarifying and/or supporting the work. In particular, clear pre- and post-operative photographs using comparative views should be included for abstracts concerned with the cosmetic quality of results. Do not label with author name(s). Adhere to the following technical points:
    • Submit figures in color if at all possible.
    • Figures should be submitted in high resolution JPEG. PowerPoint figures are acceptable but not ideal.
    • Figures should be saved in "CYMK" mode, rather than "RGB" mode.
    • Figures should have a resolution of 300 dpi or greater.
    • Physical dimensions of figures should be 3.25" wide for single-panel figures, or 6.5" wide for multi-panel figures. As a general rule, the bigger, the better.
    • Abstracts may be returned to authors if their submitted figures do not comply with the guidelines.
    • Figures will be deleted from the abstracts selected for publication if the quality is not adequate.

Scientific Poster

All accepted posters will be displayed electronically as E-posters. E-posters are powerpoint photographs or other illustrative presentations displayed electronically via monitors in specially designated kiosks around the convention center. They are an innovative approach to traditional posters, allow for significant time and cost savings for presenters, and provide the opportunity for learning long after a meeting's conclusion.

If accepted, authors will receive instructions on the simple submission process prior to the meeting. All accepted posters are eligible for the Scientific Poster Award.

Special Notes

  1. Abstracts must be submitted online.
  2. Please note that all information as you enter it will be used for search and publication as appropriate. Please ensure correct spelling, consistency (particularly if submitting more than one abstract), periods after middle initials, etc., but no periods in degrees, e.g., John J. Smith MD, PhD
  3. Abstract length smust not exceed 500 words (not including title/author names/references/figure legends/tables).
  4. Abstract text should NOT contain title or author information; these are specified elsewhere in the submission process. You should create your abstract text in a word processing program prior to beginning your online submission and use that program to check the word count.
  5. ASMS Best Paper Award. This award is for the best clinical paper submitted by an investigator under 40 and/or academic faculty member under 40 and/or resident or fellow in training. Please submit your abstract as usual through this online site and then contact the ASMS Administrative Office at 1-800-849-4682 or asms@plasticsurgery.org for consideration.
  6. The Technology Based category is for plastic surgery advancements that require/are coupled with the use of new mechanical technology, e.g. topics including but not limited to computer aided surgery; digital imaging techniques; 3D techniques; genetic engineering; technical improvements in UAL, Laser, Endoscopy, Wound Closure, technology based diagnostic or therapeutic procedures, etc.
  7. The Research Papers category is for advancements based on recent research e.g. stem cell, wound healing, implantable materials.
  8. Material presented must be original. No portion of abstracts submitted can be from previously published material, in any publication, in either print or online mediums.
  9. Papers previously presented at local and regional meetings, the Plastic Surgery Research Council or the Surgical Forum of the American College of Surgeons, are acceptable. A paper presented orally at the Plastic Surgery Research Council or the Surgical Forum of the American College of Surgeons is acceptable ONLY if the presentation was not published in an abstract supplement or book, in either print or online mediums.
  10. Please see and follow directions in Item #7 in the “Scientific Papers” section for guidance on figures, tables, and photographs.
  11. Alterations can be made to any part of the abstract until the submission deadline, which is February 20, 2009. If accepted, a separate Formal Synopsis will be required for publication in the supplement to Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. The deadline for the Formal Synopsis will be on or about June 1st, 2009. Papers are published as they were submitted. The ASPS and PRS take no responsibility for typographical or other errors.
  12. Notice of acceptance or non-acceptance will be forwarded by email to the presenter only, on or about the end of May, 2009. Presenters are responsible for notifying any co-authors. All information needed to submit the Formal Synopsis will be included in the notification mailing.
  13. Financial disclosures:

    All sources of funds supporting the work and a statement of financial interest, if any, must be included for each author, along with a list of all products, devices, drugs, etc., used in the manuscript. All manuscripts must have all of this information.

    Each author must disclose at the time of submission any commercial associations or financial disclosures that might pose or create a conflict of interest with information presented in any submitted manuscript. Such associations include consultancies, stock ownership, or other equity interests, patent licensing arrangements, and payments for conducting or publicizing a study described in the manuscript.

    This disclosure is not the same as Form III on the PRS author forms. This unique statement will be printed in the article.

    If you have nothing to declare, please include the following statement: “None of the authors has a financial interest in any of the products, devices, or drugs mentioned in this manuscript.”

  14. Patient consent forms:

    If your abstract is selected for presentation and publication, for legal reasons, we will require that the author(s) provide a Patient Photographic Consent (or release) form for any and all patients deemed "recognizable" in the photos. This includes any patient’s face or recognizable mark/tattoo, etc. You will be asked to provide us with a copy of your own institution's patient release form.
