Lecture: Reconstruction of the Knee and Ankle Joint Extensors Following Tumor Resection
After wide excision of neuromuscular units in malignancies of the lower leg, severe functional deficits result. The techniques of tendon transfers in combination with microsurgical tissue transfer are presented. While in the knee joint area, Goght's flexor tendon transposition is preferred, the stir-plasty including the tibalis anterior, posterior and peronaeus longus serve as adequate replacement for extensor function. When employing these techniques, neither joint fusions or orthotic devices are necessary.
