Hypothesis Chemical escharotomy for deep second degree circumferential burns of the hand, may obviate the need for surgical escharotomy
Method We describe our experience with the use of Accuzyme for circumferential hand burns in series of ten patients. An institutional protocol for the use of Accuzyme has been in place for the last twelve years, and these patients have successfully avoided surgical escharotomy.
Results The need for surgical escharotomy is reduced by the early use of Accuzyme. Avoidance of surgical intervention lowers the incidence of possible complications that may be associated with these procedures.
Conclusion We believe that Accuzyme provides a useful adjunct to the treatment of deep superficial and full thickness circumferential hand burns.
