Lecture: Update on Hemangiomas
The race is on to find the cause of common infantile hemangioma. Studies have gone beyond standard staining to immuno-histochemistry (protein expression) and micro-array analysis (mRNA expression). There is genetic evidence for clonality, suggesting somatic mutation(s) in an endothelial progenitor cell, originating either from the placenta, or from the fetus. Other etiologic clues are concealed in rare clinical variants such as: hemangioma with AV shunting; hemangioma with vascular/non-vascular malformations, and; congenital (fetal) hemangiomas.
